After America Report

After America Report is a digest tracking and sorting news stories, studies and other materials relating to the major themes and narratives explored in the book. Brief explanatory comments are sometimes added. The goal for this tool is to build an archive for use in research and analysis of these story lines—and as time goes on, to have a credible basis for evaluating their progress. For this purpose, the materials are sorted into nine categories:

Middling America:
Signs that America is lapsing as a global trend setter.

Dark Chaos:
A cruel Hobbesian anarchy in a world lacking any rule maker.

Happy Chaos:
A happy anarchy made possible by personal-empowerment technologies.

Multipolar World:
Nation-states, from the U.S. to India, Russia and Brazil, competing for and at times sharing power.

Chinese Century:
China as the new global rule maker.

Global City-States:
An order revolving around cosmopolitan, globally-connected city-states.

Universal Civilization:
A global civilization lending itself to global governance.

California:
America’s most future-oriented place as an illustration of After America narratives.

Lessons to Learn:
How America and Americans can usefully learn from others in the laboratory of globalization.
