China’s Advancing Age Predicament

Growing old before it grows rich

Partly as a result of China’s ‘one child’ policy, the planet’s most populous nation is now also one of its oldest, with the ratio of working-age to retirement-age adults plummeting.  Dubbed China’s ‘premature aging,’ this trend presents a long-term financial challenge for a nation whose per capita income is still far below that of the US and other wealthy nations struggling to keep their retirement and elderly healthcare systems afloat.  Could this demographic threat hold China back?
